Shape and Cover: Wax, Wire and Cloth
Explore the sculptural aspects of these basic materials in three dimensions. Students will form armatures in wire, and add cloth and wax to create figures or forms. The shapes can remain hollow or you can fill them with cotton stuffing. Then you apply a skin with burlap or cotton fabric, coated with beeswax. You can stop there or add encaustic paint/pigment and/or embedded objects such as feathers, nails, leaves, or beads to add depth and harmony.

Encaustic on Clay Sculptures
This workshop/class will teach you how to make small sculptural forms in stoneware that will later be finished with encaustic. The first half of the class will focus on hand-building forms so they are sound and will withstand the bisque firing, with attention paid to the overall shape and composition. Once fired, these pieces will be coated with wax, and the focus will shift to the surface area of the piece. A variety of techniques will be demonstrated, including burnishing in paper, incising, and exploring both opacity and transparency.

Explore the drawn line, the painterly mark and the unpredictability of the printmaking process. Develop techniques working with heat and the relationship to surface and texture. Make a series of related prints in this two day workshop. This process does not require a press.
